A Little Bit from God Can Go a Long Way
The woman suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years endured weakness, poverty, stigma, isolation, and repeated disappointment. Yet she refused to remain at home in despair. With no influential advocate to approach Jesus for her, she overcame fear and physical exhaustion, pressed through the crowd, and trusted that merely touching the fringe of his cloak would make her well. Her faith and determination brought healing.
Her story teaches that a small encounter with God can produce great results: a little bit from God can go a long way. We need not imagine that only lengthy prayers, near-perfect lives, or grand gestures can gain God’s help. Such striving may have merit, but God’s grace, love, compassion, power, and blessing surpass our merit and deeds. We should not let illness, limitations, scars, poverty, or other difficult circumstances define who we are or what we can accomplish. However hopeless our need may appear, we must not surrender hope. We can keep our focus on Jesus, reach toward God’s gracious and healing presence, and trust that even brief contact with God can change us.
Sometimes Miracles Require Time and Effort
We long for miracles that heal the body, the mind, the marriage, the community, and the church, but we often expect to receive them immediately and without effort. The culture of instant gratification makes it difficult to accept that some changes require patience, sacrifice, perseverance, and work. Naaman sought healing, but he had to acknowledge his need, humble himself, travel a great distance, accept unexpected treatment, reach the Jordan, and immerse himself seven times. Although he became angry and probably saw no change during the first attempts, he obeyed to the end and became completely clean. In the same way, we must not abandon hope when the answer is delayed. God is also at work during the waiting: He shapes our character, teaches us to persevere, and leads us toward spiritual maturity through struggle, prayer, and daily faithfulness. If we truly desire transformation, we must bring it before the Lord, stand firm, and be willing to invest time and effort. Before the miraculous and spectacular, we need to learn daily obedience, fulfill our task, and remain faithful to God’s calling.
Standing Firm in Faith
The parables call for personal and profound interpretation. The Good Samaritan teaches that faith cannot be limited to religious practices or inward holiness; it must be expressed through love, compassion, and concrete concern for those who suffer. Likewise, the parable of the sower is not merely about receiving the Gospel with a receptive heart; it was given to encourage us to persevere when following Jesus becomes difficult, risky, or frustrating. Like the farmer who sows in expectation of the harvest, we must remain steadfast, patient, and focused, even when we encounter rejection, adversity, or unexpected results. Our faith can be weakened by fast-paced lives, economic pressures, a lack of prayer and Bible study, church scandals, political commitments, and superficial Christian formation. Therefore, we need to examine what hinders our growth, tend our spiritual garden, and strengthen our roots in Scripture and in the faith. We must not allow the present to destroy our hope or distractions to draw us away from God. Let us move forward in faith, renew our commitment to Jesus Christ, and surrender our lives fully to the Lord.
