SUMMARY: There is a difference between going to church and having a relationship with God. Some people attend church to ease their conscience without truly following Jesus Christ. Being a true Christian means repenting of sins, accepting Christ as savior, and being willing to undergo a substantial change in behavior. When the Spirit of God enters a heart, it transforms us into a new person, modifying behavior, habits, relationships, priorities, and even the way we speak or dress. The greatest evidence of true conversion is a deep longing to be transformed according to God's will.
I would like to emphasize the fact that going to church and having a relationship with God are very different things. Sometimes people attend temples and thereby ease their conscience because they think that this is how they fulfill God. Afterwards, they live their life without worrying much about their behavior, whether it pleases God or not.
In Cuba we have experienced in recent years how people attend churches with much more ease and assiduity. Getting a temple filled when we had a special activity was a harrowing task years ago! But times have changed and people attend more easily. In the same way, many recognize and identify themselves as Christians with more freedom and less fear. However, it may be that some lightly declare themselves Christians without fully understanding or being willing to truly follow Jesus Christ.
