The Lord does not mock humble souls

Charles Spurgeon

SUMMARY: This passage is a promise from God that He will receive anyone who comes to Him with a sincere confession of their sins. We should acknowledge our faults and use God's promise as an argument for redemption. He will forgive us and grant us life and light. We should not despair or doubt, as God does not mock humble souls. We confess and ask for forgiveness. This is from The Bank of Faith Checkbook by Charles Spurgeon.

This is a word of truth, drawn from the experience of a man of God, and amounts to a promise. What the Lord has done, and is doing, will continue to do as long as the world subsists. The Lord will receive into His bosom all who come to Him with a sincere confession of their sin; in fact, he's always looking to find someone who's in trouble because of his faults.

Can't we endorse the language used here? Have we not personally sinned and sinned to say, "I have sinned"? Have we not willfully sinned, having perverted what is right? Have we not sinned to discover that there is no gain in it, but an eternal loss? So let's go to God with this honest acknowledgment. He doesn't ask for more. We cannot do less.

Let's use His promise in Jesus' name as an argument. He will redeem us from the abyss of hell that opens its jaws to swallow us; He will grant us life and light. Why should we despair? Why should we even doubt? The Lord does not mock humble souls. He means what he says. The guilty can be forgiven. Those who deserve execution can receive unmerited forgiveness. Lord, we confess, and we ask you to forgive us!
