Great peace is our portion in Christ Jesus

SUMMARY: God has provided a rest for believers, but those who initially heard about it did not enter because of unbelief. This rest is still available for believers today, and we should strive to enter it by giving up the hard work of sin and finding solace in the finished work of Jesus. We should also put our burdens on the Lord and rest in Him. Jesus Himself is the perfect rest, and in Him we are filled to the brim.

God has provided a rest, and some are to enter it. Those to whom it was initially preached did not enter because of their unbelief; therefore, that rest remains for the people of God. David sang about him; but he had to play the minor key because Israel refused God's rest. Joshua could not provide it, nor could Canaan grant it: it is left to the believers.

Come on, then, let us strive to enter this rest. Let us give up the hard work of sin and self. Let us abandon all confidence even in those works of which it might be said: "They are very good." Do we own some of them? In spite of this, let us rest from our own works, just as God did from His. Let us now find solace in the finished work of our Lord Jesus. Everything has been fully accomplished: justice does not require more. Great peace is our portion in Christ Jesus.

Concerning providential matters, the work of grace in the soul, and the Lord's work in the souls of others, let us put these burdens on the Lord, and rest in Him. When the Lord gives us a yoke to bear, He does so. in such a way that by assuming it, we find rest. By faith we strive to enter God's rest, and we renounce all rest in self-satisfaction or indolence. Jesus Himself is the perfect rest, and in Him we are filled to the brim.
