Your Worst Enemy Is in Your Own Breast

Summary: When fear rules us and causes us to waver, we are in danger of sinning. We must fear presumption as much as cowardice and serve our great Captain courageously. We can face threats, losses, and ridicule because God accompanies those who remain with Him, provides for His servants, and delivers those who are sincere, righteous, and holy. Just as He sustained Daniel in the lions’ den and the three young men in the fiery furnace, He will also support us even in the most desperate trials. Our worst enemy is within us; therefore, we must kneel, cry out for help, and rise with confidence, resolved not to fear.
Whenever fear takes hold of us and makes us waver, we are in danger of falling into sin. Presumption is to be feared, but we must also fear cowardice. “Dare to be a Daniel.” Our glorious Captain must be served by courageous soldiers.
What a reason this is for us to be courageous. God is with those who are with Him. God will never be far away when the hour of battle comes. Is someone threatening you? Who are you, that you should be afraid of a man who is destined to die? Will you lose your position? Your God whom you serve will provide bread and water for His servants. Can you not trust Him? Is someone ridiculing you? Will this break your bones or your heart? Endure it for Christ’s sake, and even rejoice over it.
God is with the sincere, the righteous, and the holy, to deliver them; and He will deliver you. Remember how Daniel came out of the lions’ den, and how the three holy young men came out of the furnace. Your case is not as desperate as theirs; but even if it were, the Lord will uphold you at all times and make you more than a conqueror. Be afraid of being afraid. Fear being fearful. Your worst enemy is within your own breast. Fall to your knees and cry out for help, and then rise, saying, “I will be secure and will not be afraid.”
