When the Heart Is Struck: the Sweetness of Forgiveness

After David had numbered the troops, his conscience was stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.” 2 Samuel 24:10
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Summary: My beloved friends, when the sharp sting of conviction strikes our hearts, leading us to see our sin, we find glorious assurance in God's promise. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us completely, not because of our perfect confession, but because of His perfect character and His Son's finished work. Therefore, run to this promise, agree with God about your sin, and experience the joyous, soul-transforming cleansing that truly sets us free.

My beloved friends, have you ever felt the sharp, sudden sting of conviction? That moment when your soul, perhaps puffed up with self-reliance like King David in his great folly, is suddenly laid bare before the blazing light of God's holiness? Oh, what a blessed anguish that is! David, surveying his mighty army, thought himself strong, yet in that very hour, his heart 'smote him' with the bitter truth of his pride, his reliance on flesh rather than on the living God. He saw his sin, not as a trifle, but as profound folly, crying out, "I have sinned greatly... take away the iniquity!"

And what a glorious echo of that cry we find in our own day! For us, my dears, the promise rings with even greater clarity and assurance: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness". Do you see it? Not merely merciful, though He is mercy itself, but *faithful* to His covenant and *just* because Christ has paid the full price! The demands of God's holiness, which crushed David's heart with plague, were met perfectly on Calvary, on that very Mount Moriah where David made his costly sacrifice.

Your forgiveness, dear believer, is not precariously balanced on the perfection of your confession, but securely founded on the perfect character of your God and the perfect work of His Son! When your heart is smitten, don't flee from the pain, but run to the promise! Agree with God about your sin—call it what He calls it—and behold, He cleanses not just the guilt, but the very stain of unrighteousness from your innermost being. Let no sin linger, no fault remain unconfessed. For we have an Advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous, who stands not to accuse, but to present His own precious blood. Come, then, and experience that joyous, soul-transforming cleansing that makes us truly free!
