What Gift Did You Receive?

Summary: As I was taking my son to school, we both asked God for truly grateful hearts and eyes to recognize His works. After praying, I came to understand deeply that my son was a precious gift whom God had entrusted specifically to our family. That trust also carried the responsibility to raise him, care for him, and guide him. God gives gifts to each of us. Instead of comparing what we have received with what others have, let us focus our attention on our own gift, cherish it, devote our full effort to it, and give thanks for it from the depths of our hearts.
One Wednesday, as I was taking my son to school, as I always did, he and I began to pray. We immediately began asking God to give us a truly grateful heart. Not only the knowledge that He gives us everything, but a heart that knew it deep within and could see it. We asked the Father to lift the curtain that kept us from seeing the greatness of His Power and His Majesty. We asked Him to let us see His precious works in us.
After the prayer, we could feel that the Glory of God was in our midst. I began to weep with gratitude; through my tears, I gave thanks for the son sitting beside me. I gave thanks for his life and saw how he could have been with so many other families, yet he was with ours. I saw how God could have placed him anywhere else, but He gave him to me....‘And she became pregnant and had a son. She named him Cain because she said, “Thank God, I have had a baby boy!”’ Genesis 4:1 I saw how God had given me this beautiful, priceless gift, and I saw the many other people He could have chosen, the many options God had; and out of all of them, He placed that precious pearl in my life, in my home, in my care. He entrusted him to me so that I would educate him, care for him, and guide him. He entrusted him to me; He honored me; He said to me, “I trust you.” There were so many options, and God chose me. What a privilege! God is giving gifts to all of us. I want to encourage you to value and put all your effort into the special gift the Lord has given you. Do not look at what He gave other people; instead, focus only on what He gave you and thank Him from the depths of your heart. The gratitude you will feel will be so profound that it will make you shout, “Thank You!”
