We Need Not Fear Old Age
And even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs will I carry you. I have made, and I will bear; yes, I will carry, and will deliver. — Isaiah 46:4

Summary: If we reach old age, we can receive in faith, even now, the promise that God will continue to care for us. Our strength will diminish, but He will remain the same. When we can barely support ourselves, He will carry us as He did in our youth. Even if we become a burden to others and to ourselves, He will not abandon us: He will sustain and deliver us. In many cases, He grants those who have worn themselves out in His service a prolonged time of rest, a foretaste of eternal rest. Therefore, we need not fear old age, but can grow old trusting in the grace of His presence.
The year has grown very old, and here is a promise for our elderly friends; yes, and for all of us too, when old age overtakes us. If we live long enough, we will all have gray hair; therefore, we may well enjoy this promise with faith’s foresight.
When we grow old, our God will still be the I AM, and He will forever remain the same. White hair speaks of our decline, but He experiences no decline. When we can bear no burden and can barely support ourselves, the Lord will carry us. Just as in our younger years He carried us like sheep in His bosom, so He will do in our years of weakness.
He made us, and He will care for us. When we become a burden to our friends and a burden to ourselves, the Lord will not shake us off, but rather will lift us up and carry us and deliver us more fully than ever. In many cases the Lord grants His servants a long and peaceful evening. They labored hard all day and wore themselves out in the service of their Lord, and so He said to them: “Now rest in anticipation of that eternal Day of Rest which I have prepared for you.” We need not fear old age. We should grow old gracefully, since the Lord Himself is with us in the fullness of grace.
