Summary: The fear of the Lord leads us to virtuous habits that spare us the harm caused by sin. Faith in Jesus gives us rest even in illness: worry harms us, while trust in God helps us. We can hope for a long life without being alarmed by every ailment, though we will reach old age only if it is for our good. Nor should we grieve over an early call: whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. If we live, Jesus is with us; if we die, we will be with him. To truly prolong life is to use every hour for the highest purposes.

There is no doubt about it. The fear of the Lord leads to virtuous habits, and these prevent the wasting of life that comes from sin and vice. The holy rest that springs from faith in the Lord Jesus also greatly helps a person when they are ill.

Every doctor is glad to have a patient whose mind is completely at ease. Worry kills, but trust in God is like a medicine that heals.

Therefore, we have every provision for a long life, and if it truly is for our good, we shall see a good old age and come to our graves like sheaves gathered in their season. We must not be seized by a sudden expectation of death the moment a finger hurts, but should rather expect to have to work through a considerable span of days.

And what does it matter if we are called soon to the higher sphere? There would certainly be nothing to lament in such a call; rather, it would all be a joy. Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. If we live, Jesus will be with us; if we die, we will be with Jesus. The true prolongation of life consists in living while we live, not wasting time, but using every hour for the highest purposes. May it be so today.
