Trust and Tread: the Path God Opens

My dear friends, have you not felt it? That chilling moment when you stand, as it were, between an advancing foe and an impassable sea, the very picture of Israel at the Red Sea! All human ingenuity fails. Our clever plans shatter, our strength evaporates, and the illusion of control crumbles into dust. Oh, the panic that grips the heart, urging us to frantic self-rescue or despairing accusation!

But it is into *precisely* such utter helplessness that our God speaks! Not to silence us into slothful idleness, but to summon us to a dynamic, Spirit-empowered obedience. He thunders, "The Lord will fight for you; you have only to be silent!" Mark that well! This "silence" is no passive resignation, but a profound, defiant act of trust—a cessation of our fear-driven clamor, a renunciation of our paltry human solutions, an act of faith declaring that only God will define our future.

Yet, the story does not end in stillness! Immediately, the command rings out: "Tell the Israelites to set out!" Ah, beloved, the way is then miraculously opened, and they walk through the mighty deep on dry ground. They did not *produce* the way, no! But they *walked* it. Their silence disarmed panic; their setting out embodied trust. God's action does not diminish our role; it reorders and enables it!

Consider too, the disciples, facing hostile councils. Jesus promised, "Do not worry beforehand about what you are to say; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit." What a radical assurance! Not a loss of voice, but the divine possibility of speaking truth in utter vulnerability, empowered by the very Breath of God.

This is the glorious truth, brothers and sisters: God's power and our action are never at war! He removes the impossible burden of securing our own salvation or guaranteeing our faithfulness. Because a way is opened, our feet can walk. Because a word is given, our mouths can speak! This is receptive obedience—a sacred dance where we do not pretend to divide seas or command kings, but we *do* step onto the path He opens and speak the word He gives.

So, let us cast off both panicked activism and spiritual quietism. The question is not "Should I act or wait?" but "What specific form of obedience does God's assurance open in *this* hour?" Sometimes it is stillness; sometimes it is stepping forth. In our inability, God makes fidelity possible. Let us then, with humble, assured hearts, take the next step received, for herein lies our true freedom!
