In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? — Psalms 56:4
So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. — Hebrews 13:6

Summary: The Lord never leaves or forsakes us; therefore, we can be content with what we have. In him we have friendship, treasure, and a home, and we need not depend on others’ approval to live and speak boldly. Fearing the living God frees us from fear of human threats. Although scorn and mockery may now take the place of crueler forms of persecution, we should neither be surprised nor let ourselves be intimidated. We must endure the world’s contempt and, with God’s help, stand firm when it rages.
Because the Lord will never leave us or forsake us, we should be very content with what we have. Since the Lord is ours, we can never be without a friend, a treasure, or a home. This assurance should make us feel quite independent of other people.
With such protection, we are not tempted to cower before our fellow human beings or to ask their permission to regard our lives as our own; on the contrary, we speak boldly and defy contradiction.
The one who fears God has nothing else to fear. We should live in such fear of the living God that any threats made by the haughtiest persecutor have no more effect on us than the whistling of the wind. People today cannot do as much against us as they could when the apostle wrote the verse that heads this reflection. The rack and the stake are out of fashion. The Giant called the Pope can no longer burn pilgrims. If the followers of false teachers resort to cruel mockery and scorn, we are not surprised, for the people of this world cannot love the heavenly seed. What then? We must endure the scorn of the world. Scorn breaks no bones. With God’s help, let us be courageous; and when the world rages, let it rage, but we must not fear it.
