Sin Will Not Have Dominion Over Us

Summary: God does not turn away from His love for His own; His anger, necessary for our good, does not last. He will show compassion again and bring our afflictions to an end. He will also overcome the iniquities that seek to enslave us: by His power, He will give us victory until they are extinguished. And He will completely remove the guilt of all our sins. He will cast them into the depths of the sea, not where they could rise to the surface again. We can trust that neither sin will rule over us nor its guilt remain.
God never turns away from His love, but He soon turns away from His wrath. His love for His chosen ones is according to His nature, but His wrath is only according to His office: He loves because He is love, and He furrows His brow because it is necessary for our good. He will return to the place where His heart rests, that is, His love for His own, and then He will have compassion on us in our afflictions and bring them to an end.
What a special promise this is: “He will bury our iniquities!” He will conquer them. They seek to enslave us, but the Lord, with His own right hand, will give us victory over them. Like the Canaanites, they will be defeated, put under the yoke, and finally suppressed.
As for the guilt of our sins, how gloriously it is removed! “All our sins”: the whole army of them; “He will cast”: only an almighty arm could accomplish such a wonder; “into the depths of the sea”: where Pharaoh and his chariots sank. Not into the shallows, where the tide might bring them back to the surface, but “into the depths” our sins will be plunged. They have all disappeared. They sank like a stone to the bottom. Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
