Real Peace Is Found on the Path of Truth
Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, Hear, Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that you may learn them, and observe to do them. — Deuteronomy 5:1

Summary: By God’s grace, let us imitate Paul and put his teaching into practice. In this way, we can claim the promise that the God of peace will be with us—a greater blessing than receiving peace, for with him we also have its source. His presence enables us to enjoy a peace that surpasses all understanding, even when circumstances threaten to disturb us, and moves us to be peacemakers amid disputes. But real peace is found on the path of truth. We must not abandon the faith or depart from righteousness in pursuit of peace: first we must be pure, and then peaceable.
It is a good thing when a man can be closely imitated to good effect, as Paul could be. Oh, may we receive the grace to imitate him this day and every day!
If, by divine grace, we put Paul's teaching into practice, we could claim the promise now set before us; and what a promise it is! God, who loves peace, makes peace, and instills peace, will be with us. “Peace be with you all” is a sweet blessing; but for the God of peace to be with us is a greater blessing. Thus we have both the source and its streams, the sun as well as its rays. If the God of peace is with us, we will enjoy the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, even when outward circumstances threaten to disturb us. If people quarrel, we will become peacemakers, if the Maker of peace is with us.
It is on the path of truth that real peace is found. If we abandon the faith or stray from the path of righteousness in the belief that we are promoting peace, we will be gravely mistaken. First pure, then peaceable: that is the order of wisdom and of evidence. Let us hold fast to Paul's instruction, and we will have the God of peace with us just as he was with the apostle.
