Protected During the Sifting

For, behold, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet not the least kernel will fall on the earth. — Amos 9:9

Summary: The sifting continues, and God’s people are tested wherever they go. The devil, unbelief, the world, and even the apostate church intensify the trial. Yet the sifting separates the chaff from the wheat and cleans the wheat of dust. We can trust in the mercy that promises that nothing good, true, or precious will be lost: not even the smallest believer will be left outside its care. Through Christ Jesus, we will be protected so that this trial will bring us real gain.

Divine ProtectionProtected Through Shaking

The sifting process still goes on. Wherever we go, we are still being winnowed and sifted. In every country, God’s people are being tested “as grain is sifted in a sieve.” Sometimes the devil holds the sieve and shakes it up and down at great speed, with the burning desire to get rid of us forever.

Unbelief is quick to stir our hearts and minds with its troubling fears. The world lends a willing hand to the same process and shakes us right and left with great vigor. And worst of all, the church, apostate for the most part, comes to apply still more furious force to the sifting.

Well, well! Let it continue. In this way the chaff is separated from the wheat. Thus the wheat is freed from dust and chaff. And how great is the mercy that comes to us in the text: “and not a single grain falls to the ground”! All that is good, true, and precious will be preserved. Not one of the smallest believers will be lost, nor will any believer lose anything that could truly be called a loss. We will be so protected during the sifting that, through Christ Jesus, it will become a real gain for us.
