Promoting the Peace and Prosperity of the People Among Whom We Live
Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it; for in the peace of it shall you have peace. — Jeremiah 29:7

Summary: As the Lord’s pilgrims and strangers, we are to seek the peace and prosperity of those around us and intercede for our city and nation. Let us pray boldly for peace at home and abroad, and foster principles that unite social classes and peoples in bonds of friendship. The nation’s peace contributes to our own tranquility: it allows us to raise our families in the fear of the Lord and preach the Gospel without hindrance. Today it is our duty to pray for our country, confess its sins, and ask for forgiveness and blessing through Jesus Christ.
The principle involved in this text suggests to all of us who are the Lord’s pilgrims and strangers that we should be eager to promote the peace and prosperity of the people among whom we live. Our nation and our city should be especially blessed by our constant intercession.
Sincere prayer for Great Britain and Ireland is most fitting on the lips of every English believer.
Let us pray boldly for the great blessing of peace, both at home and abroad. If strife should cause bloodshed in our streets, or if battle abroad should kill our brave soldiers, we should all lament the calamity; therefore, let us pray for peace and diligently promote those principles by which social classes at home and peoples abroad are bound together by ties of friendship.
We ourselves are promised tranquility in connection with the peace of the nation, and this is exceedingly desirable; for then we can raise our families in the fear of the Lord and also preach the Gospel without hindrance or obstruction. Today we must pray much for our country, confessing the nation’s sins and asking forgiveness and blessing for the nation through Jesus Christ our Lord.
