Our Ready Help
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. — Psalms 46:1
Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great. — Acts 26:22

Summary: Help that arrives too late is of little use when we need it. Earthly sources of help are often far away, hard to reach, and exhausted by use. The Lord, by contrast, is available when we seek Him, when we need Him, and even after He has helped us. He is nearer than our closest friend, for He is with us in trouble even when we lose our composure. He is always available, offering effective, understanding, and complete help, even in the darkest hours. So we can take refuge in Him, receive His strength, rely on His help, and rest now, free from worry and fear.
Help that is not ready when we need it is of little value. The anchor left at home is of no use to the sailor in the hour of storm; the money the debtor once had is of no value when a lawsuit is brought against him. Very few earthly sources of help could be called "ready"
: they are usually far away when sought, difficult to make use of, and even farther away once they have been used. But as for the Lord our God, He is available when we seek Him, available when we need Him, and available after we have already enjoyed His help.
He is more than "available"; He is readily available. More available than the closest friend can be, for He is with us in our tribulation; more available than we are to ourselves, for sometimes we lack presence of mind. He is always available, effectively available, sympathetically available, completely available. He is available now if this is a dark season. Let us rest in Him. He is our refuge; let us hide in Him. He is our strength; let us fortify ourselves with Him. He is our help; let us lean on Him. He is our ready help; let us rest in Him now. We need not worry for a moment, nor fear for an instant. "Jehovah of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge."
