No One Can Harm Us

Summary: As long as the Lord had work for Paul to do in Corinth, opposition could not prevent the preaching or the conversion of those who listened. God can restrain even the fiercest anger and thereby show his goodness. So, if we know we are doing our duty, we should not fear those who oppose us: let us press on with steadfastness and faith. No one can harm us unless the Lord allows it. Trust in God drives away fear; those who seem to be our enemies may even fear us more than we fear them, and where we expected opposition, we may find friends.
While the Lord had work for Paul to do in Corinth, the fury of the mob was restrained. The Jews opposed him and blasphemed; but they could not stop the preaching of the Gospel or the conversion of those who heard it. God has power over the most violent minds
. God makes the wrath of man praise Him when it breaks out, but He shows His goodness even more when He restrains it; and He can restrain it. “At the greatness of Your arm let them be silent as a stone; until Your people have passed over, O LORD, until this people whom You redeemed have passed over.”
Therefore, have no fear of man if you know you are doing your duty. Press on steadfastly, as Jesus would have done, and those who oppose you will be like a bruised reed and a smoldering wick. Many times people have had reason to be afraid because they themselves were fearful; but courageous faith in God sweeps fear aside as cobwebs are swept from a giant’s path. No one can harm us unless the Lord permits it. He who makes the devil flee at a word can indeed control the devil’s agents. Perhaps they are already more afraid of you than you are of them. So press on, and where you expected to find enemies, you will find friends.
