No One Can Harm Those Who Trust in the Living God

How this should cut off the roots and branches of all foolish and superstitious fears! Even if there were some truth in witchcraft and omens, they could not affect the Lord’s people. Those whom God blesses, demons cannot curse.

The wicked, like Balaam, may plot cunningly to destroy God’s Israel; but despite all their secrecy and scheming, they are doomed to fail. Their powder is wet, and their sword has lost its edge. They gather together; but because the Lord is not with them, they gather in vain. We can remain still and let them weave their nets, for we will not be caught in them. Even if they sought Beelzebub’s help and used all their viper-like cunning, it would do them no good: spells will not work, and divination will deceive them.

What a great blessing this is! How it calms the heart! God’s Jacobs wrestle with God, but no one will wrestle with them and prevail. God’s Israels have power with God and prevail, but no one will have power to prevail against them. We need fear neither the devil himself nor any of those secret enemies whose words are full of deceit and whose plans are deep and unfathomable. They cannot harm those who trust in the living God. We defy the devil and all his legions.
