Summary: The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus by showing us what belongs to Christ, without adding anything foreign to it. Only he can open our minds and the Scriptures so that we may clearly see the Lord’s person, work, and glory. So let us seek his illumination, not to satisfy our curiosity or even to find personal comfort, but to honor Jesus. Poor conceptions of him dishonor him; the Spirit’s teaching, by contrast, enriches our hearts and moves us to praise him with all our souls. Let us ask the Spirit to show us our Lord.

The Holy Spirit Himself cannot glorify the Lord Jesus better than by showing us the very things of Christ. Jesus is His own best recommendation. There is no way to adorn Him except with His own gold.

The Comforter shows us what He has received from our Lord Jesus. We never see anything clearly unless He reveals it to us. He has a way of opening our minds and opening the Scriptures, and through this twofold process He reveals our Lord to us. There is great art in setting forth a subject, and that art belongs in the highest degree to the Spirit of truth. He shows us the essence of things. This is a magnificent privilege, known to those who have experienced the beatific vision.

Let us seek the illumination of the Spirit, not to gratify our curiosity, nor even to bring us personal comfort, but to glorify the Lord Jesus. Oh, that we had thoughts worthy of Him! Paltry notions dishonor our precious Lord. Oh, that we had such vivid impressions of His person, His work, and His glory that we could cry out with heart and soul in praise of Him! Wherever a heart has been enriched by the teaching of the Holy Spirit, there will be a Savior glorified beyond all expression. Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly light, and show us Jesus our Lord.
