If We Walk in Impurity, God Cannot Grant Us Favors

Summary: The Lord may take away things we enjoy, but He will not withhold what is truly good; He knows how to judge what is best for us. Through Jesus Christ, we may ask Him for holiness, victory over harmful tendencies and habits, full assurance, close fellowship with Him, access to the truth, and courage to approach Him in prayer. He also grants patience, love, and a peaceful spirit to those who persevere with holy diligence. If we lack these gifts, it is not because God is unwilling to give them, but because we lack the faith to receive them. We must walk in integrity, without hypocrisy or deceit: God does not reward sin. Let us kneel before Him and claim this promise.

The Lord may take away many pleasant things, but not “what is good.” He is the best judge of what is good for us. Some things are unquestionably good, and we can obtain them when we ask for them through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Holiness is a good thing, and He will freely work it in us. He will gladly grant us victory over evil tendencies, violent tempers, and bad habits, and we need not remain without it.

He will grant full assurance, close communion with Him, access to all truth, and the boldness that prevails before the mercy seat. If we do not have these things, it is because we lack the faith to receive them, not because of any reluctance on God’s part to grant them. A calm and heavenly disposition, great patience, and fervent love: He will grant all these things to holy diligence.

But note that we must “walk in integrity.” There must be no conflicting purposes or crooked dealings; no hypocrisy or deceit. If we walk in uncleanness, God cannot grant us favors, for that would be a reward for sin. The path of integrity is the path of heavenly riches: riches so great that they include every good thing.

What a promise this is to plead in prayer! Let us get down on our knees.
