Summary: There is no promise for those who give to the poor while seeking human approval, for they have already received their reward. Our charity should remain hidden, even from our own admiration. We should give frequently and abundantly, with natural ease, without congratulating ourselves or trying to reward ourselves. God sees, records, and rewards every secret act of generosity. Moreover, anonymous benevolence holds a special joy, greater than the finest banquets. Today we can enjoy that luxury through tenderness and generosity of spirit. Both here and in eternity, the Lord will reward the secret giver in His own way, in His own time, always choosing what is best.

No promise is made to those who give to the poor in order to be seen by men. They receive their reward immediately and cannot expect double payment.

Let us conceal our charity; yes, let us conceal it even from ourselves. Give so frequently and give abundantly, as a matter of routine, until helping the poor is no more noteworthy than eating your regular meals. Give your alms without even whispering to yourselves, "How generous I am!" Do not try to reward yourselves. Leave that matter to God, who never fails to see, record, and reward. Blessed is the man who is secretly occupied with his generosity: he finds a special joy in his unknown acts of benevolence. This is the bread that, when eaten in secret, is more delicious than the banquets of kings.

How can I indulge in this exquisite luxury today? I must have a royal feast of tenderness and generosity of soul.

Here and hereafter, the Lord Himself will personally see to it that the secret giver of alms is rewarded. This will be done in His way and in His time; and He will choose what is best. It will take an eternity to reveal the meaning of this promise.
