Summary: Serving God is a delight and a privilege, because His blessing accompanies even our most ordinary needs when we are consecrated to Him. Even if we have only bread and water, we can receive them as blessed and secure provisions. God does not limit His blessing to the altar; He is also present at our table and sanctifies everyday life. None of this is due to merit or obligation, but entirely to His grace. He gives us grace to serve Him, grants us the food we need, and, moreover, blesses what He provides. Thus, those who serve the Lord can trust in His gracious care at all times.
What a promise this is! Serving God is, in itself, a sublime delight. But what an immense privilege it is to have the Lord’s blessing rest upon us in all things! Our most ordinary things become blessed when we ourselves are consecrated to the Lord. Our Lord Jesus took bread and blessed it; behold, we too eat blessed bread. Jesus blessed the water and turned it into wine: the water we drink is far better for us than any wine with which men celebrate; every drop contains a blessing. The divine blessing is upon the man of God in everything, and it will remain with him at all times.
What does it matter if we have only bread and water! For they are blessed bread and water. Bread and water we shall have. This is implied, for they must be there for the Lord to bless them. “Your bread will be given to you, and your waters will be sure.” With God at our table, we do not merely ask for a blessing; we have one. It is not only at the altar, but also at the table, that He blesses us. He serves well those who serve Him well. This blessing at the table is not owed to us, but is given by grace. Truly, there is a threefold grace: He grants us grace to serve Him, by His grace He feeds us with bread, and then, in His grace, He blesses it.
