God’s Right Hand Is a Wonderful Support

For I, Yahweh your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, Don't be afraid; I will help you. — Isaiah 41:13

Summary: The fear of falling is healthy; boldness is not always wisdom. When we feel unable to stand, we can count on God’s right hand—his power and ability at the service of those who trust in him. The same hand with which he upholds his holiness and carries out his judgments also sustains us. Though our feet are weak and the path is rough, we can move forward with courage and lean on him continually. God will not withdraw his strength: his righteousness makes him faithful to his promise, to his Son, and therefore to us. This assurance calls us to joy.

The fear of falling is healthy. Being bold is not a sign of wisdom. There are times when we feel that we must collapse unless we have very special support. Here we have it. The right hand of God is a magnificent support. Notice that it says not merely His hand, though it keeps heaven and earth in their places, but His right hand

: His power joined with skill, His power where He is most adept. But that is not all; it is written: “I will always uphold you with my righteous right hand.” The hand He uses to uphold His holiness and to carry out His royal judgments is the one that will be extended to support those who trust in Him. Being fearful is our danger, but being joyful is our safety. Devils cannot bring down the person whom God upholds.

Our feet may be weak, but God’s right hand is almighty. The path may be rough, but Omnipotence is our support. We can go forward courageously. We will not fall. Let us continually lean on the support of all things. God will not withdraw His strength, for His righteousness is there as well: He will be faithful to His promise, and faithful to His Son, and therefore faithful to us. How happy we ought to be! Are we not?
