Faith Always Sees the Bow of the Covenant Promise

I set my rainbow in the cloud, and it will be for a sign of a covenant between me and the earth. It will happen, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow will be seen in the cloud, and I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh, and the waters will no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. — Genesis 9:13-15

Summary: Though clouds abound, we do not fear another flood, because God’s covenant with Noah remains firm. Nor should we believe that the trials darkening our sky will ultimately destroy us. Where our senses see affliction, faith recognizes the covenant promise. God’s bow does not threaten: it is turned upside down, with neither arrows nor string, and its colors express joy, not wrath. Let us cast off unfounded fears and take courage. God does not leave his covenant without witness; yet even if we saw no sign at all, we can trust in him, for he does not change, lie, or break his covenant of peace.

Just now the clouds are very thick, but we are not afraid that the world will be destroyed by a flood. We see the rainbow often enough not to have such a fear. The covenant the Lord made with Noah remains firm, and we have no doubts about it.

Why, then, should we think that the clouds of tribulation, which now darken our sky, will end up destroying us? We must cast off those groundless and dishonorable fears.

Faith always sees the rainbow of the covenant promise whenever the senses see the cloud of affliction. God has a bow with which He can shoot His arrows of destruction; but look! It is turned upside down. It is a bow without arrows or a string; it is a bow hung up on display, no longer used for war. It is a bow of many colors that express joy and delight, not a bow bloodied by slaughter or blackened by wrath. Let us take heart. God never darkens our sky so much that He leaves His covenant without a witness; and even if He did, we would trust in Him, for He cannot change, or lie, or in any other way fail to keep His covenant of peace. Until the waters cover the earth again, we will have no reason to doubt our God.
