Summary: Whoever fears God and diligently walks in holiness receives a promise of blessing for their household: their wife and children will be a source of happiness. But we must not concern ourselves only with our own home; we must also seek the prosperity of the Lord’s house. Our possessions find their true good when they contribute to the good of the church. In its gatherings we receive instruction, life, and comfort, while the church grows and its work prospers. Some see this blessing throughout their lives, though their cause may weaken after their death. Let us seek to bring good things to Jerusalem all our days.

This is a promise for the God-fearing man who walks in the ways of holiness with diligent care. He will have a blessing at home: his wife and children will be the source of great domestic happiness. But, as a member of the church, he also longs to see its cause prosper, for he is as concerned about the Lord’s house as he is about his own.

When the Lord builds our house, it is right that we should desire to see the Lord’s house built up. Our possessions will not truly be a blessing unless, through them, we promote the good of the Lord’s chosen church. Yes, you will receive a blessing when you go up to the assemblies of Zion; you will be instructed, given life, and comforted in the place where prayer and praise ascend and testimony is given to the Great Sacrifice. “May the LORD bless you from Zion.”

And you will not be the only one to benefit; the church itself will prosper; believers will multiply, and its holy work will be crowned with success. Certain favored men see this promise fulfilled for them throughout their lives. Alas, when they die, their cause often grows weak. We must be among those who bring good things to Jerusalem all their days. Lord, in your mercy make us like them!
