Summary: Abiding in Jesus’ love and obeying his commandments cannot be separated. If we live in sin or neglect holiness, we cannot consciously enjoy his love. That enjoyment is delicate and sensitive to the way we think, speak, and live. When we seek to honor Jesus with a tender heart and a consecrated life, we receive signs of his love; if we want to preserve that blessing, we must persevere in holiness. Sin obscures his light, while obedience allows us to walk in it. The promise of abiding securely in his love therefore carries a solemn “if.”

Abiding in obedience and abiding in the love of Jesus are things that cannot be separated. A life under the rule of Christ is the only thing that could demonstrate that we are the objects of our Lord’s delight.

We must keep our Lord’s commandment if we wish to receive the sunshine of His love. If we live in sin, we cannot live in the love of Christ. Without the holiness that pleases God, we cannot please Jesus. Whoever attaches no importance to holiness knows nothing of the love of Jesus.

The conscious enjoyment of our Lord’s love is a delicate matter. It is far more sensitive to sin and holiness than mercury is to cold and heat. When we are tenderhearted and careful in thought, speech, and conduct, for the honor of our Lord Jesus, we receive countless tokens of His love. If we wish to perpetuate this blessedness, we must perpetuate holiness. The Lord Jesus will not hide His face from us unless we hide our faces from Him. Sin forms the cloud that obscures our Sun: if we are diligently obedient and wholly consecrated, we can walk in the light, as God is in the light, and we will abide securely in the love of Jesus as Jesus abides in the love of the Father. Here we have a sweet promise with a solemn “if.” Lord, put this “if” in my hand; for, like a key, it opens this jewel case.
