Trust in God is like a medicine that heals

SUMMARY: The fear of the Lord leads to virtuous habits and prevents a wasted life from sin and vice. Trust in God helps when we are sick as it calms the mind. We should not fear sudden death but expect a long life if it is for our good. Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. The true prolongation of life is using each hour for the highest purposes.

There is no doubt about it. The fear of the Lord leads to virtuous habits, and these prevent that waste of life that comes from sin and vice. The holy rest that springs from faith in the Lord Jesus greatly helps man also when he is sick. Every doctor is happy to have a patient whose mind is completely calm. Worry kills, but trust in God is like a medicine that heals.

Therefore, we have all the preparations for a long life, and if it is really for our good, we will see a good old age, and we will arrive at our graves like harvests gathered in their season. We are not to be overwhelmed with a sudden expectation of death the moment a finger hurts, but rather we are to expect that we will have to work over a considerable length of days.

And what does it matter that we are soon called to the higher sphere? Certainly there would be nothing to deplore in such a call, but rather everything would be a joy. Alive or dead we belong to the Lord. If we live, Jesus will be with us; if we die, we will be with Jesus. The true prolongation of life consists in living while we live, not wasting time, but using each hour for the highest purposes. So be it on this day.
