Let Us Hold Fast to Truth and Justice

Summary: The path of integrity may be slow and may not bring riches, but it gives us peace and security. By contrast, gaining wealth through questionable dealings leaves us without true peace of mind: the day will come when we must give an account. Let us hold fast to truth and justice and, by the grace of God, imitate our Lord, in whose mouth there was never any deceit. Let us not fear poverty or contempt, or do anything our conscience cannot justify. Losing our inner peace would cost more than any fortune. Though some may consider our steadfastness foolish, we will be approved where judgment is infallible.
His path may be slow, but it is sure. He who hastens to be rich will not be innocent or secure; but steadfast perseverance in integrity, though it may not bring riches, will certainly bring peace. When we do what is just and right, we are like someone walking on a rock, for we are confident that every step we take is on solid, secure ground.
On the other hand, even the greatest success achieved through questionable dealings is bound to prove false and treacherous, and the man who has attained it must always fear that a day of reckoning will come, when his gains will condemn him.
Let us hold fast to truth and justice. By the grace of God, let us imitate our God and Lord, in whose mouth no deceit was ever found. Let us not fear being poor or being treated with contempt. Never, for any reason, let us do anything our conscience cannot justify. If we lost our inner peace, we would lose more than a fortune could buy. If we keep to the Lord’s own path and never sin against our conscience, our path is safe from assailants. Who could harm us if we are followers of what is good? Fools may consider us foolish if we stand firm in our integrity; but where judgment is infallible, we will be approved.
