Give by grace what we have received by grace
Charles SpurgeonAn Israelite master had to set his slave free at the appointed time, and when he left his service, the master was to guide him through life by providing him with a liberal portion. This he had to do wholeheartedly and with joy, and then the Lord promised to bless the act of generosity. The spirit of this precept, and, indeed, the entire law of Christ, compels us to treat workers well. We must remember how the Lord has dealt with us, and this makes it absolutely necessary for us to treat others kindly. Those who are children of a gracious God should be generous. How can we expect the great Lord to bless our business if we oppress those who serve us?
What a blessing is set here before the liberal mind! To be blessed in everything we do is to be truly blessed. The Lord will send us this blessing divided into parts: a part as prosperity, another part as contentment of mind, and another part with the sense of His favor, which is the best of all blessings. He can lead us to feel that we are under His special care, and that we are surrounded by His special love. This makes our earthly life a joyous prelude to the life to come. God's blessing is more than a fortune. It enriches, and does not add affliction with it.
