The Value of Good Nutrition

You shall not spread a false report. Don't join your hand with the wicked to be a malicious witness. Exodus 23:1

Summary: Just as food affects our bodies, what we listen to nourishes our minds and spirits. We must examine everything, hold on to what is good, and reject what does not accord with God’s will. Fellowship with Him helps us recognize His word amid the enemy’s lies, even when those lies sound kind or seek to fill us with fear. Let us not spread rumors, which discredit others and make us false witnesses. Nor should we build doctrines on isolated Bible phrases: our foundation is Christ in all His fullness. When faced with temptation, let us cling to God. Let us nourish our minds and spirits with His Word, standing firm in faith to resist deception.

Many nutritionists assert that “we are what we eat,” and over time I have realized from personal experience that this is true. For a long time, I made a habit of eating vegetables and fruit before other, less nutritious foods. This not only helped me maintain a stable weight but also kept that unsightly cellulite at bay. But financial circumstances forced me to give up that habit, and, of course, the unpleasant effects soon followed.

Our minds likewise respond according to the food we give them, and the more we devote ourselves to God, the more the enemy attacks us with a multitude of schemes.

We must be careful about what we listen to. Examining everything and holding on to what is good is essential, for we must reject whatever is not in keeping with God’s will. God will show us the truth if we are in full communion with Him, for we will know with conviction which word is His and which is not.

We must be especially careful when the enemy uses friendly, kind words. Their purpose may be to make us lower our guard, and his intentions are never good.

One of the enemy’s schemes is the lie: he dresses it up and sweetens it, but his real purpose is to turn us away from our duty, which is to do God’s will. This is what drives him. When we do not give in, he tries to intimidate us by assailing our minds with dreadful thoughts and fears; but if our faith is firm, they should find no place in us.

If we nourish our spirits with the word of God, thoughts of insecurity will not enter our minds, because His presence and the assurance He gives us fill everything. Remaining steadfast and confident in the greatness and power of our Father will help us believe not a single one of Satan’s lies, and in this way we will gain the victory.

Lies and rumors go hand in hand. Saying “They say that…” without naming who says it is not valid; it sows discord and helps no one. The purpose of a rumor is to discredit the people it is about, and it weakens them when they are not firm in faith. In Old Testament times, false testimony was punished by death (Deuteronomy 19:15–21). Whenever we take part in a rumor, we become false witnesses.

To crucify Christ, they took portions of what He said and interpreted them in their own way. Even today, many groups called Christian take portions of the Bible and build a doctrine on them, without considering that the foundation is not an isolated phrase but Christ in His entirety, for “All things were made through him, and without him nothing that was made was made.” John 1:3

At other times, the enemy tempts us to sin so that we fall into disrepute and bring shame upon our Creator. The Old Testament relates in the first 2 chapters of 1 Kings that when someone sinned, they ran to the temple and grasped the horns of the altar. Today we do the same, except that we cling not to the horns of the altar but to the very God whom we offend by our actions.

Let us avoid “dietary transgressions”; let us nourish our minds and spirits with the unadulterated food that is the word of the living God.
