Our Inheritance Is Greatness

More than failure, the number-one enemy of human potential is mediocrity of spirit, settling for our circumstances, a lack of vision; it is thinking that we are destined merely to walk the earth when, in reality, God made us to soar through the skies, to be cosmonauts of the spirit.

That fundamental lack of aspiration in us, combined with ignorance of the spiritual laws of success and personal growth, forms a deadly formula for the fulfillment of our dreams.

The great adventure of personal success begins when we realize that victory has already been declared over our lives. Greatness is our inheritance. Our true identity as children of God is personal fulfillment: living a full life, rich in meaning and positive influence.

For those of us who want to succeed in life, the challenge lies not so much in shedding an identity of failure and taking on a new one—the identity of a fulfilled and successful person. Rather, it lies in becoming aware of our true standing as children of God, our present condition as blessed people who already walk under the sign of divine approval and support. As the psalmist declares in the beautiful Psalm 23, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” The children of God, shepherded through life by an almighty and fatherly Shepherd, are pursued by goodness, sheltered by a cloud of blessing that follows them generously through life. Let us learn to live in that expectation of blessing. God has marked us for good, and his mercy will follow us all the days of our lives.
