Devotional: My God Is the Creator

Have you ever thought, as a human being, about your place in the universe before the immensity and majesty of the One who created the world out of nothing? Have you thought about how insignificant we seem amid so many wonders drawn by the voice and finger of God?

The first verse of the Bible answers all the questions that philosophy has asked throughout the ages in its fruitless search for the origin of everything that exists. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1), and he created man and woman and gave them authority to rule over all creation. When man took the wrong path with the authority God had given him, he disobeyed and fell into the dark abyss of sin and separation from God. Man forgot that supreme authority belongs to God, who made everything for his glory.

The Lord of history, the creator, perfect and redeemer of the world, set his eyes on man. He cares about our relationship with him (Ps 8:4–8), speaks to us, exalts us, showers us with favors and, as if that were not enough, the eternal God bestows on man, the crown of his creation, salvation in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 8 is an exaltation of God, creator of all wonders, who cares for his creation and even more for man—a weak, forgetful, proud, disobedient being. Even so, the Lord dignifies him, gives him authority, makes us stewards of all things, and holds us responsible for caring for them. Despite our smallness in the universe, he reminds us that we must be like children to walk beside him and attain victories in the spiritual life; that a humble human heart is wholly pleasing to him; and that, above all things, we are subject to his authority because he is the owner and Lord of all creation. The spiritual meaning of the stewardship entrusted to us—so that we may administer all things in his name—depends on this submission to the Lord’s will.

The prophet who most clearly foresaw the Messiah who was to come—his birth, his death, and his coming glory—portrays us in a single verse: “… all people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field” (Isa 40:6 NIV). In the next verse he explains that the grass withers and the flower fades. Despite this, the Lord exalts sinful man because he loves us, promises us heaven, which we could never have earned through our own efforts, and amazes us with the gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus.

We are not the result of an arbitrary circumstance, nor beings brought into existence by chance. God crowned his creation by creating us. He molded the clay with his hands and gave it life with his breath. “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” Yes, we are part of everything God made and therefore, in his sight, we are good, though as frail as the flower of the field. Sin is our great problem because it leads us to scorn and harm creation. The natural world is being destroyed by sinful man, and the Christian cannot remain indifferent.

Jesus Christ is the Lord of creation, who did not consider being equal to God something to cling to, but emptied himself of his glory, became like man, and humbled himself to the point of death (Phil 2) to give this humanity, this fragile and inconsistent human being, the benefit of redemption and to make us heirs, together with him, of all things created and yet to be created. “But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, through whom he created the worlds and whom he has made heir of all things” (Heb 1:2).

God created the human being for his own glory, and all creation bears witness to that glory, which man touches with his own hands when he allows Christ into his life. He is a God who is near and personal, and you are his glory!
