Jesus Christ Is the Creator of Everything That Exists (Part 2)
You are the Lord, even you alone; You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things that are thereon, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve them all; and the host of heaven worships you. — Nehemiah 9:6

Summary: Jesus Christ created everything that exists: not only material and visible reality, but also spiritual beings, including angels and fallen powers, as well as every human authority. Although some of these powers rebelled and exert an evil influence, they are all under Christ’s lordship because they were created through Him and for Him. His name is above every heavenly, earthly, and demonic authority. Because He is God and the owner of creation, Jesus deserves our worship. Although He came humbly as a servant to accomplish the work entrusted to Him by the Father, the Word reveals His true greatness. We can fully entrust our lives into His powerful hands and rest secure in Him until the end.
Jesus’ creative role is not limited merely to animals, plants, insects, and human beings. Paul is saying something astonishing: Jesus’ creative role goes much further, and Jesus Christ is in fact the Creator not only of the things of this world that are on the earth, but also of visible and invisible things.
Colossians 1:16 says: “For in Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible; whether thrones or dominions or powers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
Now, what does one immediately think of upon hearing that expression, “visible and invisible”? Clearly, he is speaking about earthly beings that can be seen with the human eye—material, physical things, insects, plants, water, the sea, the sky, the planets, the galaxies, the stars, all these things. But Paul is saying, in addition to that, that there are invisible things. What are those invisible things? Spiritual beings. Let us say that the wonderful thing is that he mentions principalities, powers, thrones, and dominions. He is using spiritual language to refer to angelic beings and, incredibly, also to demonic beings.
The principalities and powers of which Paul speaks in other passages are these authorities that are mysterious and about which we do not know all the details. He is also referring to the evil powers that rule this world, which Paul says are in the heavenly places when he says that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against heavenly hosts that rule creation malevolently.
So it is interesting here that Paul is saying that the angels, archangels, cherubim, seraphim, and all the mysterious spiritual beings mentioned in the Bible—as well as those fallen beings whom the Bible calls demons, including Satan himself, a fallen being whom we believe was originally an exalted angel created by God and who rebelled against God—all these mysterious beings have something to do with governing creation and exercise influence.
I believe this also refers to human authorities: kings—today they would include corporations—human governments, nations, and princes. Every authority was created by Jesus Christ. That is why we understand what it says, right, when it says in Philippians chapter 2: “God gave Him a name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.” That is, the angels, cherubim, and seraphim; also kings, governments, all people who have authority on Earth, the laws of nature, and also those beneath the earth in hell—the demonic powers. The name of Jesus is above all those different names, authorities, and powers.
And the reason this is so is that He is the Creator of all these things; therefore, by right, by lordship, and because He is the owner of all these things, He has authority over them. We can therefore understand the importance of Jesus and why we can worship Him. He did not hesitate to receive worship, even though the Bible says that God alone is worthy of worship. When Thomas kneels before Him, worships Him, and says to Him, “My Lord and my God,” the Lord Jesus Christ does not correct him, because He is God and deserves that worship.
It says: “Everything was created through Him”; that is, He was the instrument God used. Jesus Christ is like the Father’s executive agent, and everything was also created for Him—for His glory, for His satisfaction, to His credit. Creation exists to glorify Jesus Christ. This was perhaps not as clear when He came into the world in the form of a servant, in the form of a humble, simple man, to carry out certain tasks that the Father had entrusted to Him. But afterward the Word certainly clarifies for us the true importance, greatness, and lordship of the Lord Jesus Christ, and thus invites us to worship the Lord and to understand that, when we entrust our lives to that exalted Christ who is God Himself, Creator of the universe, we are entrusting ourselves to the hands of someone who is more than powerful enough, as the Bible says, to keep them entrusted to Him until the end of time.
