Summary: Cuba has experienced more than the social revolution for which it is known. Since the 1990s, it has been experiencing a spiritual revolution: churches and other religious communities are growing, new congregations are forming, and many Christians gather fervently in homes. This is happening without preaching through mass media; faith is shared through personal relationships. God has blessed Cubans, and the Holy Spirit moves people to seek and follow Him. The years when atheism left churches empty are behind them. Believers who suffered trusted in God and waited for Him; today many are returning to the faith, while others seek Him in repentance.
When people hear the name of the island of Cuba, one word always comes to mind: Revolution. It is the word associated with the social process that has been taking place on the Caribbean island for more than half a century. The Cuban Revolution is praised by some as much as it is condemned by others.
There is another revolution that has taken place in Cuba, especially in recent years, that has not received much attention in the news media. Since the 1990s, a true spiritual revolution has taken place on the island. Cubans, once uninterested in religion or churches, have returned to them. All Christian denominations, as well as other religions, report very significant growth in recent years. This is a fact already recognized in Cuba by those who study social phenomena and by the churches themselves in their statistical studies. It is also plain to see. There are multitudes of new congregations, and many churches meet in Christians’ homes with overflowing enthusiasm and fervor. Most strikingly, this is happening in a country where the gospel is not preached through mass media, and the faith spreads exclusively through human relationships, without the use of media publicity of any kind. Many countries that do have that possibility are not experiencing the same interest in spiritual matters or the same growth in the life of their churches.
We Cubans have undoubtedly been blessed by God, and the Holy Spirit is working on the island in a way never experienced before. Just as the book of Genesis, speaking of creation, says that the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2), that same Spirit now moves throughout the country, touching people and prompting them to seek God and follow him.
The years when Cuban churches stood empty while a powerful movement of atheism and unbelief took hold of the nation are behind us. True believers undoubtedly suffered, but they trusted in God and waited on him. Those difficult times have passed, and today we see many returning to the faith, along with many others who, recognizing their need for God, now seek him eagerly in repentance. God is great!
