Desperate Waiting

Cuba is not exactly the country where one can gauge the technological progress that exists in the world today. Even so, everyone wants the best, and the best is the fastest,

today’s world moves at a dizzying pace, and this is felt most keenly in the field of computing.

If a computer is slow, people say it is no good—especially young people, who want to press a key and have the machines respond immediately. In short, waiting is not this world’s strong suit.

Although we are part of the world, we Christians are not of this world. We know that our God sometimes does not respond as quickly as we hope, but he does respond with the perfection that characterizes him.

Sometimes we fall into a dark pit from which we do not know how to get out. The psalmist did know, because he had been down in that muddy depth: “And he brought me up out of the pit of despair, out of the miry clay…” Ps 40:2

When we hit bottom, despair overtakes us. We cannot wait, and we begin trying to get out by our own strength; in that desperate struggle, all we manage to do is sink deeper.

We do not even realize that we are in the pit because we were not walking on the right path: we lost our way and chose the wrong road.

But “Blessed is the man who has put his trust in Jehovah” (Ps 40:4).

God does not let us down. Every minute of our lives is in his hands, and he knows what is best. We do not; our insecurity paralyzes us and makes us take the wrong paths. But he, in his great mercy, has shown us a single path, and it always leads to the foot of the Cross.

There is no better rescue team than the living God. When he pulls us out of the mud, all we can do is fall to our knees and show lasting gratitude that changes the way we live, so that we can bless everyone around us.
