A New Song

Summary: The Bible urges us to sing a new song to the Lord because God continually works wonders and acts on our behalf. This does not mean learning a different song every day, but allowing our praise to be renewed daily by his presence. It should not be a routine, discouraged, or empty expression, but praise born from the heart, directed to our heavenly Father, and sung with spiritual passion. God’s wonders are reason enough for our mouths never to cease praising him. Every day we have reasons to do so: we breathe, see, walk, enjoy the company of family and friends, and, above all, have received salvation by grace. Therefore, let us sing with renewed and sincere gratitude.
The Bible exhorts us to sing a new song to the Lord. God is continually doing wonders in our lives. He is powerful and is always working on our behalf. This is reason enough to sing Him a new song—one that comes from the heart. What do we mean by a new song?
Does this mean that I have to learn a song every day to sing to God? Not necessarily. By a new song, we mean that it should be refreshed daily by the presence of God.
It does not refer to a trite song, learned by routine and sung without enthusiasm; rather, it should be a refreshing new song that comes from the heart, sung with spiritual passion and directed, of course, to God, our Heavenly Father. Verse 1 itself tells us why this song should have these characteristics: “because God has done wonders.” We need no other reasons to sing to the Lord, for this is reason enough for our mouths never to cease praising Him. Figures from biblical history always sang when they witnessed the wonders of God. Isaiah, for example, said (Isa. 25:1), “Lord, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will praise Your name, for You have done wonders; Your ancient counsels are truth and faithfulness.”
The question that concerns us is this: Can I sing to the Lord today because of the wonders He has done in my life? Surely, the answer to this question is an emphatic “yes.” The mere fact that we are breathing, seeing, walking, and have family and friends—and above all, salvation by grace—provides sufficient reasons to sing God a new, refreshing, and passionate song.
