Repentance
Alberto González MuñozWe have probably all had the experience of taking a wrong turn at some time. Whenever we do it, at first everything seems to be going well, then doubts begin. We understand that we are not going where we should go and yet we move a little further. At last the moment comes when we make up our minds and turn back. The Bible calls this experience of turning back and abandoning a path that we recognize as wrong.
In recent times I have seen that it has become fashionable in some television interviews to ask famous personalities or artists: Do you have something to regret? To my surprise, most of the interviewees answered with great pride that they were not. They insist that their life has been the best and that they do not have to regret anything at all.
However, the Bible says that God commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30). Regardless of the aforementioned statements, human beings have much to regret. To say that we have never needed to do so is to pretend that we have never been wrong, that we have never made the wrong decision and that our performances have always been impeccable. Because our human condition presupposes that mistakes and failures are possible, no really sensible person would dare to deny that at some time in life they have felt the need to repent.
Why does God command everyone to repent? The answer is simple, the only way to fix our mistakes is to admit that we have made a mistake. To do this, we have to learn to be honest with ourselves. What happens is that human beings tend to be stubborn and we are ashamed to admit mistakes and bad actions. As if it were not something very common to all! Sadly, we prefer to hide our mistakes and hide our failures and sins. God wants us to repent because he is very interested in our lives going the best way and he knows that a repentant heart opens all doors to receive his forgiveness and help. However, maintaining a rebellious spirit that refuses to acknowledge mistakes and sins is the easiest path to hardness of heart and therefore bitterness. Faced with any failure, mistake, or bad decision, the wisest thing to do is repent and ask for forgiveness.
Everything changes when we repent.
God bless you!
