Promote peace and prosperity for the people among whom we inhabit
Charles SpurgeonThe principle involved in this text suggests to all of us who are the Lord's pilgrims and strangers that we should be willing to promote peace and prosperity for the people among whom we dwell. Our nation and our city are to be especially blessed by our constant intercession. A heartfelt prayer for Great Britain and Ireland is very fitting in the mouth of every English believer.
Let us pray boldly for the great blessing of peace, both at home and abroad. If the skirmish caused bloodshed in our streets, or if the battle abroad killed our brave soldiers, we should all mourn the calamity; therefore, let us pray for peace, and diligently promote those principles by which social classes at home and foreign peoples are bound together with ties of friendship.
We ourselves are promised tranquility in connection with the peace of the nation, and this is highly desirable; for in this way we can educate our families in the fear of the Lord, and also preach the Gospel without hindrance and without obstacles. Today we have to pray a lot for our country, confessing national sins, and asking for forgiveness and blessing for the nation, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
