Charles Spurgeon
Charles Spurgeon

SUMMARY: The author longs to have a heart that is always right and grateful to bless the name of the Lord. The righteous may face tests but will ultimately be blessed by God for their integrity. The promise of dwelling in God's presence is reserved for the upright and favored people who enjoy communion with Him. The author desires to be upright in all things and give thanks to God's name forever. Amen.

Oh, I long for my heart to be right so that I can always bless the name of the Lord! He is so good to those who are good, that I long to be among them, and to feel grateful every day. Perhaps the righteous are shaken for a moment when their integrity leads to severe tests; but in truth the day will come when they bless their God for not having yielded to evil suggestions or adopting changing policies. In the long run true men will thank the God of the righteous for leading them on the right path. Oh, that I could count myself among them!

What promise is contained in this second clause, "The upright will dwell in your presence"! They will remain accepted while others will only be condemned. They will be courtiers to the Great King, and they will enjoy an audience whenever they wish. They will be favored people to whom Jehovah smiles and with whom he sustains a communion of grace. Lord, I long for this lofty honor, this precious privilege: it will be heaven on earth if I can enjoy it. Make me upright in all my things, so that I can be today, and tomorrow and every day, in Your heavenly presence. Then I will give thanks to Your name forever. Amen.
