God Blesses Those Who Love His Wisdom

Our relationship with God goes hand in hand with reverent fear of Him. The fear of God is as critical as it is necessary. Without the fear of God, there seems to be no true communion with our Creator. The wisdom of the spiritual person is a gift from the Almighty, grounded in knowledge of His Word and the revelation of His Son Jesus Christ.

The foundation of the natural person’s wisdom (apart from God) is the claim that everything begins with self-knowledge as one faces life, rejecting the knowledge of God. To love wisdom in the fear of God is to recognize our smallness before His majesty and might and to enthrone Him once and for all in our hearts. Why? Because Christ is the wisdom of God. “God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself…” (1 Cor. 1:30 NLT)

Knowing God is not merely knowing His attributes, but persevering in reverent fear because He is our Father, and we owe Him the respect of children who, all too often, go astray by disregarding His Word and doing our own will. Reverence is unconditional obedience as we build communion with Him each day until we become one with Him. James says that anyone who wants to obtain wisdom may ask the Father for it, and He will provide it (James 1:5).

The wise person seeks God’s counsel because they know it is the only powerful opponent of free will and the schemes of the evil one. In striving to shape life according to the mind and will of God, the spiritual person who loves God’s wisdom and counsel begins to resemble Christ more each day, viewing earthly things from an eternal perspective. Divine wisdom comes from faith in Jesus; it begins and ends in that faith. It is a supernatural gift sustained by obedience, reverence, and perseverance in doing what is right in God’s eyes. The Holy Spirit is the giver of that supernatural gift, and the good news is that you and I have it.

God blesses those who love His wisdom and seek His counsel first. The church of Christ must redouble its prayers that God will raise up and equip mentors and counselors filled with the Holy Spirit to help the church in times of crisis and “birth pains,” without forgetting that, in His Word, God urges us to seek His wisdom so that we may know Him more and better, and so that the joy of a spiritual life lived in dependence on His counsel may consume us. Paul said to the Ephesians: “…and I ask God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God” (Eph. 1:17)

I am sure that you, like me, have had the privilege of personally knowing fools who became wise through the foolishness of preaching and an understanding of the mystery of God’s wisdom, Jesus Christ, the incarnation of the One who fills all things and is in all things. Let us live as wise spiritual men and women (Eph. 5:15), because that is God’s will.
